Yayoi Kusama, the Japanese artist renowned for her polka-dot motifs and immersive installations, was included in Time Magazine's 2025 list of the 100 most influential people. This recognition acknowledges her lasting impact on the contemporary art world.

Born in Matsumoto, Japan, Kusama began painting at a young age, inspired by her hallucinations that often included fields of polka dots. These distinctive motifs became the hallmark of her art. She moved to the United States in 1958 and immersed herself in the New York art scene of the 1960s, associating with the Pop Art movement.

During this period, Kusama organized numerous "happenings" in New York, including performances where she painted nude participants with colorful polka dots. These works explored themes of identity, sexuality, and the body, challenging the social conventions of the time. Her work continues to be exhibited in museums worldwide, attracting millions of visitors and solidifying her status as a global icon.

In 2025, Kusama received international recognition for her influence in contemporary art. Her ability to blend traditional Japanese elements with Western influences has inspired numerous generations of artists. Designer Marc Jacobs has shared his admiration for Kusama, highlighting her radical influence in the art world.

Kusama's influence extends beyond the art world. Her work with Louis Vuitton, in particular, resulted in iconic collections featuring her signature polka dots and mirrored elements. The first collaboration took place in 2012. The clothes, bags, shoes and accessories created by Marc Jacobs were decorated with recognizable polka dots. This collection has become one of the best-selling in the history of Louis Vuitton. In 2023, in collaboration with the fashion house, a collection called "Creating Infinity" was created. It included more than 400 objects, including clothes, bags, sneakers, jewelry, as well as perfumes and suitcases.

Kusama continues to live and work in Japan, maintaining an active presence in the international art scene. Her ability to address universal themes through her art has made her works timeless, continuing to resonate with audiences in 2025 and beyond.
