Air India Flight AI171 Crash: Investigation and Safety Measures

Edited by: Uliana S.

On June 12, 2025, Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad Airport, resulting in the loss of 241 passengers and 19 individuals on the ground. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) of India is leading the investigation into the incident.

The AAIB's preliminary report indicates that both engines lost thrust after their fuel control switches were moved from the "RUN" to the "CUTOFF" position shortly after takeoff. The exact cause of this switch movement remains under investigation. The report also highlights that the aircraft's emergency systems, including the Ram Air Turbine (RAT), were activated in response to the engine failure. However, despite these measures, the aircraft was unable to regain altitude and crashed into a building near the airport perimeter.

In response to the crash, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has mandated comprehensive inspections of Air India's Boeing 787 fleet. These inspections focus on critical systems such as fuel monitoring, cabin air compressors, and electronic engine controls. The DGCA has also directed Air India to conduct power assurance tests and review maintenance logs for any recurring faults. These measures aim to ensure the safety and reliability of the airline's fleet during the ongoing investigation.

The investigation is ongoing, with the AAIB collaborating with international agencies, including the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Boeing, and GE Aerospace. The final report is expected to provide detailed findings and recommendations to enhance aviation safety.
