A safeguarding review at Bangor Cathedral has brought to light concerns regarding a culture of blurred sexual boundaries, inappropriate language, and excessive alcohol consumption [3, 4]. The Church in Wales initiated an investigation into these issues, deeming them "very serious and urgent" [3, 6].
The independent report, released on May 3, 2025, detailed findings of weak financial controls, unclear reporting lines, and inadequately scrutinized spending decisions [3, 4, 5]. It also highlighted the absence of contracts for paid roles or tenancy agreements, and a lack of codes of conduct, creating a potentially unsafe environment [3, 4].
Archbishop of Wales, Andrew John, has acknowledged the concerns and is calling for the recommendations to be implemented within three months, led by the Archdeacon of Bangor [3]. The review also noted instances of hurtful gossip and a safeguarding approach that did not meet expected standards [3, 4, 5]. Priority is to be given to establishing an alcohol policy at the cathedral, following reports of excessive consumption and inappropriate behaviors [3].
