Tower Hamlets Town Hall in Whitechapel has been named 'London Building of the Year' for 2025 by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
The reinvented former Royal London Hospital was lauded as a "tour de force of reinvention." Judges praised its combination of sensitivity to the existing building's story with sharp contemporary detailing.
The approach was described as both "sensitive and brave, creating a modern, civic home for council administration, local services, and democracy." Other winners include the restoration of Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben) and the V&A Photography Centre.
RIBA Regional Director of London, John Nahar, congratulated all the winners. He highlighted the projects' innovative approaches to challenges like affordable housing, social isolation, and environmental concerns.
All London regional award winners will be considered for the RIBA National Award on July 10. National Award winners will then be considered for the RIBA Stirling Prize for the best building of the year.
