Italy's Pavilion at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale to Focus on the Relationship Between Land and Sea

Edited by: Ek Soshnikova

The Italian Pavilion at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia in 2025 will explore the architectural, scientific, and cultural reflections on the sea. Titled 'Terrae Aquae. Italy and the Intelligence of the Sea,' the project, promoted by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture and curated by Guendalina Salimei, will be held from May 10 to November 23, 2025, at the Tese delle Vergini of the Arsenale in Venice. The Italian participation focuses on the Mediterranean, expanding to neighboring oceans, emphasizing the structural relationship between water and land, natural and artificial, infrastructure and landscape, and city and coast. This relationship impacts the country's identity and the delicate balance between environment, people, culture, and economy, which must be protected and re-designed for adaptation to a future shaped by pressing needs. The exhibition will feature works from established and emerging individuals and groups, fostering intergenerational and intercultural dialogue. It will involve designers, scholars, cultural operators, young people, poets, artists, research institutions, and third-sector entities in rethinking the relationship between land and sea. The aim is to stimulate a collective intelligence capable of initiating renewal from the Italian coasts to a global level.
