Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower Peaks May 5-6, 2025: Best Viewing Tips

Edited by: Tasha S Samsonova

The Eta Aquarids meteor shower, derived from Halley's Comet, is set to peak between May 5th and 6th, 2025. This annual celestial event occurs as Earth passes through the debris field left by the comet.

For optimal viewing, especially in the Northern Hemisphere, the best time to observe the shower is in the pre-dawn hours of May 6th. NASA suggests looking away from the moon to allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness for about 30 minutes. It's also advisable to avoid looking at bright lights such as cell phones.

Viewers in the Southern Hemisphere can expect to see a higher number of meteors, potentially up to 50 per hour under ideal conditions. Observers in the Northern Hemisphere may see around 10-15 meteors per hour. Find a dark location away from city lights, lie flat on your back with your feet pointing east to maximize your view of the sky.
