NASA is currently monitoring several asteroids as they make close approaches to Earth in early May 2025 [15]. While these space rocks are traveling at high speeds, NASA assures that none pose an immediate threat to our planet [15].
The asteroids, tracked by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and the Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS), vary in size and distance [15]. On May 2, 2025, asteroids 2025 HP22, 2025 JA, 2025 HJ5 and 2025 HR1 made close approaches [2, 15]. For example, asteroid 2025 HP22, estimated to be about 22 feet in diameter, passed within 306,000 miles of Earth [1]. Asteroid 2025 JA, slightly larger at around 26 feet across, came within 317,000 miles [1].
Another asteroid, 2024 YR4, initially had a 3.1% chance of impacting Earth in 2032 [1]. However, further analysis has reduced the risk to a minimal 0.004% [1, 4]. NASA emphasizes that most NEOs are not on a collision course with Earth, with their orbits ranging from tens of thousands to millions of kilometers away [1].
