L 98-59 c: Earth-Sized Exoplanet Shows Potential for Atmosphere

Edited by: Tasha S Samsonova

Astronomers have identified exoplanet L 98-59 c, approximately 35 light-years from Earth, as potentially having an atmosphere. This planet, slightly larger than Earth, orbits the red dwarf star L 98-59. The exoplanet was discovered in 2019. Observations from the Hubble Space Telescope suggest the presence of an atmosphere on L 98-59 c. According to a recent study, L 98-59 c could be the first planet smaller than 2 Earth radii with a definitively detected atmosphere. Further observations with the Hubble and Webb telescopes are planned to confirm these initial findings. L 98-59 c orbits a red dwarf star, L 98-59, along with other confirmed planets. Data from NASA's TESS mission indicates that the star is more active than previously thought. If confirmed, L 98-59 c would provide valuable insights into the atmospheres of similar-sized rocky planets and their ability to withstand the harsh conditions around red dwarf stars.
