China and South Africa Establish First Quantum Link in Southern Hemisphere

In March 2024, China and South Africa achieved a milestone by establishing the first quantum key distribution link in the Southern Hemisphere. This collaboration, detailed in 'Nature,' involved connecting China's quantum satellite with ground stations at Stellenbosch University. During a 10-day experiment, a secure key generation rate of 1.07 million bits was achieved, surpassing previous results in China. This advancement ensures the inclusion of the Southern Hemisphere in future secure communication networks. Scientists attribute the success to China's Jinan-1 satellite and favorable environmental conditions in South Africa. The collaboration aims to enhance South Africa's expertise in quantum technology, foster talent, and create job opportunities, positioning the country to participate in the next industrial revolution. Both countries plan to continue their collaboration, exploring further breakthroughs in quantum communication.
