Black Holes: Gateways to White Holes and New Universes?

Edited by: Vera Mo

A new study from the University of Sheffield challenges the traditional view of black holes as cosmic dead ends. Researchers propose that black holes might instead be gateways to white holes, theoretical objects that expel matter, energy, and even time back into the universe.

Published in Physical Review Letters, the study uses quantum mechanics to suggest that matter inside a black hole could transform into a white hole, with time transitioning into a new phase. Dr. Steffen Gielen, a co-author, explains that "in quantum mechanics, time never really stops... This means that the inside of a black hole might not be the end, but a transition to something new."

The research connects black holes to dark energy, suggesting it could be the key to understanding time itself. This could potentially allow scientists to explore what lies beyond a black hole, raising questions about new universes and the resetting of time. If proven, this research could bring us closer to a deeper understanding of the universe.
