Gene Therapy for Hemophilia B in Spain

Edited by: 🐬Maria Sagir

The Hospital Universitario Álvaro Cunqueiro in Vigo, Spain, has become the first public medical center in the country to administer innovative gene therapy for Hemophilia B.

This groundbreaking procedure, performed on June 18, 2025, represents a significant step forward in treating this rare and severe genetic bleeding disorder.

The therapy, known as etranacogene dezaparvovec (Hemgenix), delivers a working copy of the factor IX gene into the patient's body, helping to restore normal blood clotting.

Clinical trials have shown promising results: patients with severe and moderately severe Hemophilia B experienced increased factor IX levels and a reduction in bleeding events.
