The medieval castle of Skiathos, known as "Kastro," has reopened to the public in May 2025 after extensive restoration. The project included the construction of a new bridge and the restoration of the castle gate, enhancing accessibility and preserving this historical monument. This initiative aims to rebrand Skiathos as a year-round cultural destination, attracting visitors beyond its famous beaches.
Originally built in the 14th century around 1360, Kastro served as the island's capital until 1829, providing refuge from pirate raids. The castle's strategic location on a rocky promontory made it a natural fortress. Restoration efforts included securing the rocky slopes, restoring paved paths, historic churches, and even the mosque within its walls.
The reopening was inaugurated by Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni and Skiathos Mayor Thodoris Tzoumas. Minister Mendoni highlighted the castle's significance as both a cultural landmark and a catalyst for local development. The restored Kastro connects the island's rich past with its vibrant present, offering locals and tourists alike a chance to explore its historical depths.
