Excavations in Pompeii have led to the discovery of a previously unknown mosaic on Via dell'Abbondanza, the ancient city's main street. The find resulted from collaborative work by specialists from the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, the Free University of Berlin, and the University of Naples L'Orientale.

Via dell'Abbondanza, also known as "Street of Abundance," served as Pompeii's central artery, connecting the east and west sides of the city. It was a hub for workshops, shops, residences of the elite, and public buildings. Archaeologists focused on an area of the mosaic floor that had not been previously documented.

The mosaic stands out for its quality and preservation, despite the centuries that have passed since the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Mosaics were used in homes, public buildings, and temples, reflecting the status of their owners and the artistic preferences of the time.

The location of this artifact on the city's main street suggests the area's importance in Pompeii's public life. Archaeologists suggest the mosaic may have adorned the entrance to a significant building, possibly a bathhouse or the home of a prominent resident. Further investigations are planned to uncover additional fragments of the mosaic and other artifacts to deepen the understanding of Pompeii's history and culture.

Pompeii, near Naples in the Campania region, was buried under volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.
