A new enzyme, CelOCE, has been discovered with the potential to improve biofuel and bioproduct production from plant residues. According to the researcher, when combined with existing enzyme cocktails, CelOCE can increase the amount of sugar obtained from cellulose by more than 20%, making the process more efficient and economical. The specific bacterium in which the enzyme was found was proposed to be called Candidatus Telluricellulosum braziliensis, as it was isolated in Brazil and has cellulolytic potential. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the establishment of India's second National Gene Bank. This initiative aims to preserve India's genetic resources and ensure long-term food security. The new facility, first introduced in the Union Budget 2025-26, will house an extensive collection of 1 million germplasm lines, providing conservation support for both public and private sectors engaged in genetic resource management.
