A surprisingly large disk galaxy, dubbed 'Big Wheel,' has been discovered in the early universe, approximately two billion years after the Big Bang. The discovery, made by the 'Cosmic Web' research group at the University of Milano-Bicocca using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), reveals a galaxy with dimensions more typical of giant galactic disks in the present-day universe. 'Big Wheel' has a radius of about 10 kiloparsecs, three times larger than other galaxies found at similar cosmic times and comparable to massive disks in the current universe. Spectroscopic analysis confirms it rotates like a spiral galaxy, similar to the Milky Way. Its rapid growth may be linked to its location within an exceptionally dense region of space.
