Musk Calls for ISS Deorbiting, Cites Limited Utility

Elon Musk tweeted today that it is time to begin preparations for deorbiting the International Space Station (ISS), stating that it has served its purpose and offers very little incremental utility. This statement comes despite NASA already working with SpaceX to develop a "US Deorbit Vehicle" to deorbit the ISS starting in 2030, a contract awarded in June. Musk also reiterated his desire to focus on Mars over Moon missions. The ISS continues to serve an important function, allowing scientists to conduct experiments in microgravity, including research that aligns with Musk's goals of sending humans to Mars. NASA currently has no replacement space station planned, relying on private partnerships.
