Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki, a twin volcano in East Flores, Indonesia, erupted on Monday, July 7, 2025, sending a massive column of volcanic materials 18 kilometers into the sky. Ashfall has been reported in nearby villages, and the eruption has prompted authorities to reassess and potentially expand the danger zone.
The eruption included pyroclastic flows of searing gas clouds, rocks, and lava that traveled up to 5 kilometers down the volcano's slopes. Drone footage revealed lava filling the crater, indicating significant magma movement and resulting in volcanic earthquakes. This recent activity is the most significant since a major eruption in November 2024.
The Geology Agency has increased the alert status to the highest level, more than doubling the exclusion zone to a 7-kilometer radius. The Frans Seda Airport on the island has remained closed since an earlier eruption, highlighting the ongoing impact of the volcanic activity on the region.
