On July 8, 2025, Greece faced a severe heatwave, prompting significant measures to protect public safety and cultural heritage. The iconic Acropolis in Athens was temporarily closed from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. local time due to soaring temperatures.
Temperatures in Athens reached 38°C (100.4°F), with forecasts predicting highs up to 42°C (107.6°F) in some regions. This was the second heatwave to impact Greece since late June.
The Ministry of Labour mandated a work stoppage from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. for outdoor workers, including construction personnel and delivery services. High-risk warnings for wildfires were issued for areas including greater Athens, central Greece, and the Peloponnese, with the fire department managing up to 50 fires daily.
