Earthquake Off Peru's Coast Causes Damage and Injuries

A 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck off Peru's central coast on Sunday morning, impacting Lima and Callao. The US Geological Survey located the epicenter approximately 14 miles southwest of Callao.

Authorities confirmed one fatality and 36 injuries resulting from the seismic event. A 36-year-old man in northern Lima died when a building under construction collapsed.

The Emergency Operations Center reported road and school building damage. President Dina Boluarte is scheduled to assess the situation in Callao. The quake caused the cancellation of a major soccer match. Peru, situated on the "Ring of Fire," is prone to frequent seismic activity.
