Crete Wildfire Forces Mass Evacuations

A rapidly spreading wildfire on the Greek island of Crete has prompted the evacuation of over 5,000 people, primarily tourists. The fire, which ignited on July 2, 2025, in the Lasithi region, has caused damage to homes and forests.

Strong winds have fueled the blaze, causing it to spread rapidly towards residential and tourist areas. Authorities have evacuated at least three locations: Achlia, Ferma, and Schinokapsala. Evacuees have been moved to temporary shelters, including a gymnasium in Ierapetra.

Over 230 firefighters, supported by 46 vehicles and 13 hiking teams, are battling the flames. Ten helicopters and water-dropping aircraft are also being used. However, efforts are hampered by wind gusts reaching up to 9 on the Beaufort scale, which has caused flare-ups and made it difficult to control the fire.
