Mount Etna Erupts in May 2025: Ash and Lava Spew from Volcano, No Airport Disruptions

Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17

Mount Etna, Europe's largest active volcano in Sicily, Italy, has erupted in May 2025. The southeastern crater of the volcano intensely spewed ash and lava. This volcanic activity occurred during the day.

Magma flowed from the southeastern crater, creating a visible lava flow. The Catania branch of Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) is closely monitoring the situation.

Authorities confirmed that the eruption had no effect on operations at Catania's Vincenzo Bellini International Airport, and flights continued as scheduled. While ashfall was reported in some nearby residential areas, the situation remains under control.
