The Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Martinique (OVSM-IPGP) reports elevated volcanic activity at Mount Pelee this week. Between May 2nd and 9th, 2025, 256 volcanic earthquakes were recorded. This confirms persistent seismic activity beneath the volcanic edifice.
The majority of the earthquakes (243) were volcano-tectonic, linked to micro-fracturing of rocks in known active zones. These are located between 1.0 and 1.4 km deep. The OVSM also noted 9 long-period earthquakes and 4 deep hybrid earthquakes, often related to the circulation of magmatic fluids at depth.
This week's activity is an increase compared to the previous week's 137 earthquakes. The alert level remains YELLOW, corresponding to a vigilance phase.
