Nigeria faces desertification and biodiversity loss

Edited by: Anna 🎨 Krasko

The state of Kebbi in Nigeria is facing increasing desertification due to climate change. Rising temperatures and reduced rainfall are shrinking water bodies. This is leading to a scarcity of food for migratory birds, causing them to decrease in number or stop coming altogether.

The landscape is transforming due to both weather patterns and human activities. Deforestation for firewood is rampant, and water resources are being depleted. Temperatures in Argungu have exceeded 40°C for the past two months, contributing to what scientists say is the hottest year on record.

The emir of Argungu has imposed fishing restrictions to preserve fish stocks. However, he fears that life as they know it will cease, forcing people to migrate if nothing is done. Climate change has reduced agricultural productivity in Africa by nearly 34% since the 1960s.
