Tsunami Alert Issued After Magnitude 7.4 Earthquake Near Antarctica

Authorities issued a tsunami alert for coastal regions of southern Argentina and Chile following a significant earthquake. The quake, measuring 7.4 in magnitude, struck in the sea near Antarctica. This prompted immediate evacuation orders for low-lying areas.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, approximately 218 kilometers south of Puerto Williams. Chile's National Seismological Center reported the event. Coastal residents in the Magallanes region of Chile were urged to evacuate to higher ground.

Argentina's Tierra del Fuego province also issued evacuation orders for Puerto Almanza. Residents were advised to suspend all maritime activities in the Beagle Channel. The tsunami warning remained in effect until further notice.
