Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17

A sudden snowstorm and hail in East Sikkim stranded approximately 800 people between Tsomgo Lake and Thegu on Sunday, April 27, 2025. Authorities, including the Sikkim Police and the Indian Army, successfully evacuated all individuals to safety. No casualties or major injuries were reported during the rescue operation.

Due to the heavy snowfall and hazardous road conditions, Nathula Pass has been closed to tourists. Travel permits to the area have been suspended. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for continued rainfall in the region.

Tourism activity in Eastern Sikkim has been temporarily suspended, and the administration will lift the suspension depending on weather conditions. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is also working to restore connectivity in North Sikkim after heavy rains triggered landslides, damaging roads and stranding over 1,000 tourists. Partial road connectivity has been restored, enabling the safe evacuation of those tourists.
