Istanbul is experiencing a series of aftershocks following a magnitude 6.2 earthquake on Wednesday. The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (Afad) reported numerous aftershocks early Thursday, including one measuring 4.6.

Afad has recorded over 300 aftershocks along the tectonic trenches in the Marmara Sea since the initial quake. Fearful of a larger earthquake, many residents have left the city.

Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu stated that 236 people were injured, with 173 in Istanbul. Fifteen people remain hospitalized, some injured while trying to escape buildings. Twelve buildings have been evacuated as a precaution.

Seismologists suggest a larger earthquake is likely. The potential magnitude could reach 7.4, with some experts estimating up to 7.7.
