Mount Marapi in West Sumatra, Indonesia, erupted again, emitting volcanic ash up to 1,000 meters above its peak. The eruption occurred on April 19th, producing seismic activity with a maximum amplitude of 30.3 millimeters lasting 42 seconds.
Authorities have advised residents, climbers, and tourists to remain at least three kilometers away from the volcano's center. Those living in valleys and along rivers flowing from the volcano's peak are urged to be cautious of cold lava flows, especially during the rainy season. Residents should also keep masks handy in case the volcano starts spewing ash.
The volcano recorded nine eruptions in April alone. In December 2023, a sudden eruption of Mount Marapi killed 24 hikers and injured many more. In May 2024, heavy rains combined with volcanic ash caused deadly landslides, resulting in at least 50 fatalities.
