Landslide in Tana Toraja Prompts Emergency Declaration

Edited by: Anna 🎨 Krasko

Following a devastating landslide in Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi, the local government has declared a state of emergency. The decision, formalized in Regent Decree Number 71/IV/Year 2025, will remain in effect for 14 days, until April 22, 2025.

The landslide, triggered by heavy rainfall on Wednesday, April 16, struck three hamlets in Bonggakaradeng District, Buakayu Village. Unstable soil conditions on the hillside exacerbated the situation, leading to the collapse.

The disaster resulted in three serious injuries and six minor injuries. Two houses and one place of worship were severely damaged. Local authorities, along with the military and police, are working to clear debris and restore access to isolated areas.

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) urges residents and local governments to remain vigilant against potential hydrometeorological disasters. Regular monitoring of weather forecasts, drainage system maintenance, and preparation of disaster preparedness kits are crucial.

The BNPB advises those living near rivers or hillsides to evacuate temporarily to safer locations if heavy rain persists for more than an hour and visibility drops below 100 meters.
