Colorado State University (CSU) forecasters predict that the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season will be above average. This forecast, released on April 3, 2025, is influenced by warmer-than-normal sea surface temperatures in the eastern and central Atlantic Ocean and the potential transition from La Niña to ENSO-neutral conditions. These conditions are conducive to hurricane formation and intensification. The CSU team anticipates 17 named storms, nine of which are expected to become hurricanes. Four of these hurricanes could reach major status, with winds of at least 111 mph (Category 3 or higher). The forecast indicates an above-average probability for major hurricanes making landfall along the continental United States coastline and in the Caribbean. Coastal residents are reminded that it only takes one hurricane making landfall to make it an active season. Residents should prepare every season, regardless of predicted activity.
