Costa Rica's Poás Volcano Shows Highest Eruptive Potential Since 2018

Edited by: Anna 🎨 Krasko

The Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) reported on March 25, 2025, that the Poás Volcano exhibits its highest eruptive potential since 2018, raising concerns about a potential large-scale eruption in the coming days or weeks.

The volcano remains at alert level 3, a status unseen since 2023. The National Emergency Commission (CNE) has elevated the Poás Volcano National Park to a yellow alert and maintains a green alert in nearby cantons. The national park remains closed indefinitely as a preventive measure. A new eruption occurred on Thursday morning, but cloud cover prevented determining the plume's height.
