South Australian Beaches Closed Due to Toxic Algal Bloom, Fish Deaths Reported

Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17

Two South Australian beaches have been closed following reports of unusual off-white foam, dead fish washing ashore, and surfers experiencing illness. Surfers at Waitpinga reported sore eyes, sore throats, and coughing after water contact over the weekend. Officials suspect a microalgal bloom, potentially caused by recent hot and dry weather, is the source. Scientists are analyzing water samples to identify the organism, a process that may take several days. The foam, a byproduct of decaying toxic organisms, blankets hundreds of meters of coastline. Authorities will reopen the beaches after conditions improve and risks are assessed.
