Flash Floods in Italy's Sicily, February 3, 2025

Edited by: Anna 🌎 Krasko

On February 3, 2025, severe flooding affected parts of Sicily, Italy, as heavy rainfall inundated the region. Authorities reported that within four hours, the island received the equivalent of a month's worth of rain, particularly impacting the Messina area. The intense downpour triggered landslides, and emergency services were deployed to rescue residents trapped in their homes using boats. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

In Calabria, across the Strait of Messina, heavy rain also prompted officials to advise residents to remain indoors. Following relentless rain, a large sinkhole opened up in Catania, Sicily - just meters from moving traffic.

Tremors in Tuscany

Concurrently, multiple earthquakes struck Tuscany, with the strongest measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale, occurring near Siena around 8:30 PM. The tremors were felt in the city and surrounding areas, prompting residents to evacuate buildings. No significant damage was reported, but schools in the region are closed on February 4 for safety inspections.
