Northern Lights Expected in U.S. States, January 24, 2025

Edited by: Anna 🌎 Krasko

A remarkable display of the northern lights, or aurora borealis, is anticipated across several U.S. states this weekend, following a significant solar storm. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued a forecast indicating a planetary K-index of five out of nine for January 24 and 25, suggesting heightened geomagnetic activity.

States with the highest likelihood of witnessing the auroras include Alaska, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and North Dakota. There is also a possibility for residents in South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Maine to observe the phenomenon, albeit with lower chances. Viewing conditions are optimal between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time, with clear skies and minimal light pollution enhancing the experience.
