PITTSBURGH, December 4, 2024 — A winter storm watch has been issued for several counties in western Pennsylvania, with significant snowfall anticipated over the coming days.
The National Weather Service has placed Mercer, Venango, Clarion, and Jefferson counties, along with eastern parts of Indiana, Westmoreland, and Fayette counties, under a winter storm watch effective from 4 p.m. Wednesday until 4 a.m. Friday.
Winter storm watches indicate that wintry weather conditions are expected to be impactful in the area. These watches may be upgraded to winter storm warnings or winter weather advisories depending on the severity of the situation.
An Alberta Clipper is forecasted to affect the region late Wednesday into Thursday morning, bringing 1-2 inches of snow across much of the area. Snowfall from this system is expected to be widespread.
Most of the snow accumulation is projected to conclude by Thursday morning. However, road crews may face challenges due to the rapid snowfall, potentially affecting morning commutes.
Additionally, lake effect snow is anticipated as cold winds blow over the warmer waters of the Great Lakes, leading to increased snowfall in certain areas through Friday morning.
