Severe Winter Storm Hits U.S. Northeast, Dec 1, 2024

The northeastern United States is currently experiencing its first significant winter storm of the season, impacting states such as New York, Pennsylvania, and Michigan.

Heavy snowfall has blanketed regions with accumulations reaching nearly 2 feet in some areas. Emergency declarations have been issued in New York and Pennsylvania as officials prepare for hazardous travel conditions during the busy holiday weekend.

The National Weather Service reported that temperatures have plummeted 10 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit below average in the Northern Plains, with frigid air expected to spread across the eastern U.S. by Monday.

In Pennsylvania, Erie County recorded nearly 2 feet of snow, prompting a disaster emergency proclamation from Governor Josh Shapiro. The region has witnessed nearly 200 incidents reported by state police within a 24-hour period due to treacherous road conditions.

Travel advisories have been issued, urging residents to shelter in place as snow and icy conditions hinder movement. In Michigan, lake-effect snow has compounded the situation, with areas receiving over 2 feet of snow. The city of Gaylord set a new record with 24.8 inches of snow in a single day.

Authorities are mobilizing snowplows and emergency services to assist stranded travelers and ensure safety during this winter event.
