In September 2024, Churna Island, near Karachi, Pakistan, became the country's second Marine Protected Area (MPA). This designation follows Astola Island, which was declared an MPA in 2017. Both islands are vital for marine biodiversity.
Churna Island boasts over 50 coral species and 250 fish species, along with various invertebrates and vertebrates. However, it faces threats from industrial activities and recreational practices. The Balochistan government endorsed the management plan for Astola Island in April 2025.
This plan includes regulations against destructive fishing and requires approvals for recreational activities. Efforts to implement management plans for Churna Island are underway. These initiatives are crucial for preserving Pakistan's marine life and meeting global conservation goals.
