A new study reveals an innovative approach to fisheries management in the Yellow Sea Large Marine Ecosystem (YSLME). Researchers have integrated species spatio-temporal distribution (STD) data with surplus production models (SPMs) to enhance stock assessments.
This integration provides a more detailed understanding of the stock status of species like Trichiurus lepturus (largehead hairtail). The method allows for localized insights into population fluctuations and the identification of critical habitats.
The study found that the Trichiurus lepturus population has recovered to an acceptable level since 2017. This integrated approach can optimize fisheries management, prevent local population collapses, and ensure sustainable exploitation of fish stocks.
