Chao Phraya River Cleanup: Ocean Cleanup Marks 1-Year Anniversary in Bangkok (May 2025)

Edited by: Inna Horoshkina One

The Ocean Cleanup is celebrating the first anniversary of its partnership on the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok this May 2025. This initiative includes the deployment of the first Interceptor™ in Thailand, marking a significant step in tackling plastic pollution in one of the world's busiest rivers.

Working with Thai government agencies, universities, and corporations, the project has enhanced the understanding of plastic pollution in Bangkok's waterways. Partners include the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Chulalongkorn University, and Coca-Cola Thailand. Interceptor 019, a solar-powered vessel, has removed over 150 tonnes of waste in its first year.

The Chao Phraya River is crucial for Bangkok, serving 11 million residents. Interceptor 019 is located near the Commemoration of H.M. the King's 6th Cycle Birthday Park, targeting a 16-kilometer stretch with 61 canals. Data from the collected debris aids researchers in understanding plastic composition and improving waste interception efforts.
