Barbados Partners With Global OTEC to Harness Ocean Thermal Energy

Edited by: Inna Horoshkina One

In a groundbreaking move, Barbados has partnered with Global OTEC to advance its renewable energy goals. This collaboration, announced at the UN Ocean Conference in Nice, France, aims to utilize Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) to generate sustainable clean energy.

The Barbados Investment & Development Corporation (BIDC) and Global OTEC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This partnership will support sustainable clean energy production within the Corporation's Industrial Estates. The initiative is a key step towards Barbados's goal of carbon neutrality by 2035.

OTEC technology uses the temperature difference between warm surface water and cold deep water to generate electricity. Global OTEC is also leading the EU-funded project PLOTEC, which is developing a storm-resistant structure for OTEC in weather-prone regions. This project will enhance the resilience of ocean energy to tropical storms, ensuring a reliable power supply for Barbados.
