Helsing's AI-Powered SG-1 Fathom Underwater Drone Enhances Ocean Security in 2025

Edited by: Inna Horoshkina One

Helsing, a German defence company specializing in AI, has launched the SG-1 Fathom, an autonomous underwater drone designed to protect ships and critical infrastructure. The underwater glider can patrol for up to three months, detecting underwater threats with unprecedented accuracy.

The drone uses the Lura software platform and an advanced AI system. This system identifies and classifies sounds from ships and submarines with exceptional sensitivity. Lura's acoustic model detects sounds ten times quieter than other AI models, differentiating vessels and operating 40 times faster than human operators.

According to Helsing, this technology will help illuminate the oceans and deter adversaries, strengthening Europe's security. Western countries are actively seeking ways to protect underwater pipelines and data cables from sabotage and espionage. The British Royal Navy is already deploying SG-1 Fathom gliders. These drones, originally designed for whale tracking, now form an invisible shield beneath British waters, deterring sub-surface intrusions.
