Colombia's Caribbean Coast Grapples with 2025 Sargassum Bloom: Collaborative Efforts Underway

Edited by: Aurelia One

A significant sargassum bloom is impacting Colombia's Caribbean coast in 2025, affecting areas such as Acandí and the Acandí Fauna Sanctuary [3]. The brown algae tide covers substantial coastal ecosystems, including rocky coastlines, beaches, marine pastures, mangroves, and coral areas [3].

In response to this environmental threat, the Ministry has requested collaborative efforts from the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management, the General Maritime Directorate, and the National Navy [6, 17]. The goal is to coordinate management actions with territorial entities [6, 17].

National and international experts are being consulted to gain technical insights from countries in the Greater Caribbean that have experience with similar sargassum events [8]. Local efforts are focused on manual collection and burial of the sargassum to mitigate its impact [4]. The Association of Caribbean States (ACS) is also playing a role in addressing the sargassum influxes through regional discussions and promoting science-based cooperation [8, 11].
