A recent study indicates that artificial intelligence (AI) can significantly improve ocean cleanup efforts. AI algorithms have been shown to increase the efficiency of plastic removal by over 60%, bringing the goal of plastic-free oceans closer to reality. The research, conducted between 2022 and 2024, introduces a dynamic optimization model.
This model quickly identifies the most effective plastic collection routes, even across vast ocean areas, and adapts to changes in plastic density and weather patterns. According to the study, the AI-powered routing system increased plastic collection efficiency by more than 60% compared to traditional methods, based on a one-year dataset.
The Ocean Cleanup has already integrated this algorithm into its operations in the Pacific Ocean. The AI model optimizes collection routes and extraction schedules, ensuring seamless operations even during rough sea conditions. This initiative supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water), which aims to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources.
