Nippon Paint's AQUATERRAS Coating Confirmed Safe for Marine Life in 2024 Study

Edited by: Aurelia One

A recent independent study conducted by PML Applications Ltd. in August 2024 has verified that Nippon Paint Marine's AQUATERRAS hull coating has no adverse effects on marine life. The biocide-free, self-polishing coating was tested by exposing marine organisms to its flakes, simulating in-water hull cleaning. The results demonstrated no negative impact on ragworms or bivalve cockles after 28 days of exposure. Bivalves continued their normal growth, showing no significant difference in growth rates compared to the control group. Similarly, ragworms gained weight, with no significant differences from the control group. Further tests simulating in-water hull cleaning on AQUATERRAS-coated panels, using standard methods, revealed that zinc and copper levels remained at background levels. This confirms that the coating does not release these metals. According to Nippon Paint Marine, AQUATERRAS offers up to 14.7% fuel savings compared to the market average.
