Science Meets Tradition: Global Efforts for Ocean Stewardship

Edited by: Aurelia One

Khanh Hoa, Vietnam:
Nearly 200 scientists gathered for the 5th International Symposium on Marine and Fisheries Science and Technology, focusing on the future of sustainable aquaculture and marine conservation.

Key discussion areas included:
🔹 innovative aquaculture techniques
🔹 climate change impacts on marine ecosystems
🔹 sustainable seafood processing

🌱 Notably, Italian and Vietnamese researchers are working together on new policies for coral reef restoration, vital to the health of oceanic life.

Malta:
The LIFE OASIS project is empowering local communities to protect marine turtles and promote sustainable fishing across the Mediterranean.

With the project’s support, Maltese fishers are being equipped with:
🔸 smart buoys — to track gear and reduce losses
🔸 eco-friendly aFADs — fish aggregating devices that minimize environmental harm

🔹 The "Guardians of the Ocean" conference fosters collaboration between scientists, fishers, and conservationists — addressing:
— the challenge of ghost fishing (abandoned gear)
— the reduction of bycatch
— and the importance of trust-building across the entire marine network

Together, these initiatives show that lasting change arises when science, tradition, and stewardship flow in harmony.
