Olive Ridley Turtles Return to Kerala Coast After Decade-Long Absence

After a decade-long absence, Olive Ridley turtles have returned to lay eggs on the beaches of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. In March 2025, volunteers from the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), aided by local fishermen and residents, are protecting approximately 230 eggs laid on Shanghumughom and Valiyaveli beaches. The turtles' return is seen as a positive sign of improving environmental health in the coastal waters. The eggs were relocated to a safer location to protect them from beachgoers, high tides, and poachers. Environmental degradation, coastal development, and unseasonal rains had previously deterred the turtles from nesting in the area. The WTI and local volunteers are closely monitoring the eggs in anticipation of the hatching season.
