SS United States: From Record-Breaking Liner to Artificial Reef

Edited by: Anulyazolotko Anulyazolotko

The SS United States, once the fastest ocean liner, has embarked on its final voyage from Delaware Bay to become the world's largest artificial reef off Florida's Gulf Coast. After 30 years docked in Philadelphia, the ship is being towed to Mobile, Alabama, for cleaning before its submersion. Okaloosa County purchased the vessel, planning to transform it into a haven for marine life and a unique diving attraction. The project includes a museum to honor the ship's history, which saw famous passengers like Marilyn Monroe and U.S. presidents. Despite its retirement in 1969 due to declining travel by sea, the SS United States will continue its legacy underwater, offering an immersive experience for divers and a habitat for marine species.
