Tuvalu Launches $17.5 Million Coastal Adaptation Project to Combat Climate Change

In a significant move against climate change, Tuvalu has initiated the Tuvalu Coastal Adaptation Project, Phase 2 (TCAP-II) on Fogafale Island. This $17.5 million initiative, supported by Australia, New Zealand, and the USA, aims to bolster the resilience of this vulnerable island nation.

TCAP-II will protect approximately 800 meters of shoreline along Fogafale Island’s southern lagoon, where nearly half of Tuvalu's 12,000 residents live. The project includes the reclamation of eight hectares of elevated land, providing a safe haven for communities facing the threats of king tides and rising sea levels.

Hon. Dr. Maina Talia, Tuvalu's Minister of Home Affairs, emphasized the project as a beacon of hope, showcasing the innovation and resilience of small island nations. The initiative not only addresses immediate climate challenges but also invests in the long-term sustainability of Tuvalu.

With construction set for completion by August 2025, TCAP-II will enhance the capacity of Tuvalu’s government and civil society to implement effective coastal protection measures.
