Heatherwick Studio and the Aurelia Institute are showcasing their collaborative project, Space Garden, at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale. This innovative project envisions a self-sustaining greenhouse in low Earth orbit designed to advance agricultural research and foster global collaboration for a sustainable Earth-Space ecosystem.
Space Garden features 31 growth chambers, each with individually controlled climates suitable for various plants, fungi, and algae. The primary goals are to test autonomous horticulture in microgravity and to inspire creative, biophilic space architecture. The project aims to transfer heavy industry off Earth and build space infrastructure to benefit our planet.
A large model of Space Garden is on display at the Biennale, which runs from May 10th to November 23rd, 2025. The installation includes functional life-support systems and a half-scale illuminated model, offering a glimpse into the future of sustainable off-world environments and the potential for space to improve life on Earth.
