In July 2025, Senegal and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) initiated the Scaling-Up Resilience in Africa’s Great Green Wall (SURAGGWA) project, aiming to restore degraded lands and enhance climate resilience in the Sahel region. This partnership focuses on ecological restoration, sustainable economic development, and environmental governance to combat desertification and climate instability affecting the area.
The project is part of a broader national strategy vital for biodiversity and livelihoods. Senegal has experienced significant deforestation, leading to a reduction in the capacity of its forests to absorb CO₂, emphasizing the need for immediate action and educational programs to reverse the trend.
Furthermore, the Senegalese government and the FAO signed a partnership on July 4, 2025, for the SURAGGWA project, which aims to restore degraded forest landscapes and enhance climate resilience. This project will provide the opportunity to teach the next generation the importance of environmental protection. The initiative is a practical demonstration of how communities can work together to protect their natural resources, providing a valuable lesson for future generations.
