In this misty landscape, volunteers and scientists have conducted the first large-scale survey in half a century, turning a routine woodland trek into a significant scientific breakthrough.
By peering into fallen trunks and rocky crevices, they identified 1,109 different species. In the damp twilight, researchers documented the soft glow of rare glow-worms, discovered fascinating slime mold forms, and cataloged unique lichens that thrive here thanks to the exceptionally humid climate.

Primary efforts are focused on the active restoration of the forest's structure. Throughout the year, volunteers work to clear the land, manually removing invasive rhododendron thickets to allow sunlight to reach native mosses and ferns once again.
At the same time, experts are implementing humane deer management strategies and installing protective fencing for saplings. These measures allow rare Scottish aspen and oak trees to grow undisturbed, establishing a healthy undergrowth.
